i have three originals on display at the Leavenworth County Artists Association's annual juried holiday art show, opening friday december 04, 5-8pm, at the Heritage Center in Leavenworth. one of the pieces, called personal space, was created specifically for the theme (studio: celebrating artists and art spaces) and is quite different from my normal work. it is a custom built hdu box that is 12" x 12" x 7". it has a peephole on the front door that the viewer will look through, revealing myself painting in the buff on my studio walls. it has a daguerrotypesque personal feel about it. the reactions of some people are hilarious; might be worth recording the opening.

i just finished up a fun new project that incorporates some revealing photos my wife took of me, a digital collage, a bas relief, a custom designed/built box, a hinging door with peephole, and more. It was a quicky: five days from dream to reality. It's my first nude self portrait. I feel so liberated! ha!

eric is currently doing clean up to complete the design for an 8 x 20 foot relief mural he will be producing, through young sign company, for st francis de sales catholic church in lansing, ks. the design depicts the biblical story of the multiplication of fish and loaves. it is being collaged in photoshop and will ultimately be carved as a relief in high density urethane. The hdu, after carved, will have the digital collage printed on it in semi-transparent sepia tones to complete the look. the 5 sections will then be installed on site, mounted seamlessly behind the altar.

the mrs and i just got back from oregon; was fantastic as always. we hit up st helens and spent halloween night at the mcmenamins cornelius pass roadhouse where the strange tones played some slammin jams. we went to a pumpkin patch and saw a midget wrestle a baby lion. we then spent a few nights in a house on the john day river just north of astoria, spending the majority of the mornings and evenings taking in the beautiful scenery of the river landscape while hanging out during the days in astoria. we checked out the hotel elliott, fort george brewery and wet dog astoria brewing comany. fort george has great beer and food; i highly recommend the vortex ipa and smoked salmon spread! the bitter bitch ipa at wet dog was also good, and they have a fantastic view or the columbia. after a few days we left astoria, drove across the columbia river to the north tip of the long beach peninsula in washington, and then turned around and drove down the coast to newport. we rented a beach house in lincoln city that was built during wwII as a lookout, perched high above a beautful beach with giant ocean sculpted rocks, tide pools, millions of mussels, barnacles and all the works. we actually saw a whale! blowing its hole and rolling around a few hundred feet out for like an hour and a half as we watched from devil's punchbowl.
we got to experience two beautiful sunny days where the ocean was as calm as ive ever seen, followed by a day where a hardcore winter storm came in off the ocean with 80 mph wind gusts that made our old beach house feel like it was going to fly away. the ocean showed its power with 35 foot waves at times, completely engulfing the entire beach below our house. we left on friday morning and that night a tornado swept up off the ocean smashing up dozens of beach houses just north of where we stayed. was crazy - must have been our kansas mojo working or something.
we then stayed two nights near the pearl district in the middle of portland. portland is an awesome city for sure! super clean, great transportation, youthful, great architecture, food, beer!! its always funny how many people from larryville end up there. just go there and wear a rock chalk shirt around; you'll see.
thanks for all the hospitality jess, jamey, audrey, david, ginny, james and the james gang, scott, that good looking $@%* mike. hey zoe, hows toe?
